If you are setting up digital visitor check-in in the UAE, you will encounter two identity methods almost immediately: Emirates ID and UAE Pass. They are often mentioned in the same breath, but they are not the same thing, and understanding the difference helps you design a check-in flow that is both fast and secure.
Emirates ID: the physical card
Emirates ID is the physical identity card every resident carries. At a check-in kiosk, the card is scanned and the visitor's verified details are read directly from it. The advantage is that it works for anyone with a card, no smartphone or app required, which matters for contractors and older visitors.
The trade-off is that it requires the physical card to be present and a scanner at the point of check-in. For walk-in visitors and contractors, this is usually the most reliable method.
UAE Pass: the digital identity
UAE Pass is the national digital identity app. Instead of scanning a card, the visitor confirms their identity through the app, often by scanning a QR code. It is fast, contactless, and ideal for pre-registered visitors who can verify before they even arrive.
The best visitor systems support both. A pre-registered corporate guest might breeze through with UAE Pass, while a contractor arriving for the first time uses their Emirates ID at the kiosk. Supporting both methods means you never force a visitor down a path that does not suit them.
